November 7, 2018

What made you enter your field of work? In high school I went on a field trip to the University of Waterloo's cadaver lab for our Exercise Science class. I was one of four people that got to go on this trip and was the only one to not faint as we got to pull organs out of the cadavers. I knew then that I would be well suited for the medical field. I was pretty set on going to university for Kinesiology but then came across the radiology field. Radiology is very physics, pathology and anatomy based which are all subjects I am passionate to learn about. Four years of education later I am a Medical Radiation Technologist that specializes in Radiology (X-Ray and Computed Tomography (CT)). I love how this career allows you to advance in many different pathways (example MRI, CT Mammography, Bone Mineral Density and even teaching).

What do you love most about your job? I love that as an MRT every day and every case is different. Yes, there are those days that you only do chests, knees and hips but all those cases come with different patients and their own stories. We also get a lot of variety in our work from the Operating Room, gastric, CT and general X-ray depending on what shift we are on.

Describe one of your most challenging days at work. The recent code orange was the hardest day I've had at work. This was a very emotional and stressful day for all the HPHA but that incident just goes to shows the amazing team we have here at HPHA.

Tell us about your most gratifying experience at HPHA. When you are able to make a patient's day. As a MRT our work is very fast paced. We are meeting a new patient every five to 20 minutes depending on the case. To be able to connect with patients and create a joyful experience for them in that short amount of time says a lot about your patient care skills. Those awesome experiences are what I hold onto and remember to get me through the hard days.

When you tell people what you do how do they react? “That's an interesting career!” or “So you're a button pusher?” or “Aren't you worried about the radiation?”

What would people be surprised to learn about you? I am one of the youngest technologists in the Stratford Imaging Department. Also, my face is on a coach bus that travels across Canada! See if you can spot me!

What are your  favourite ways to spend your free time? Playing sports, working out and spending time with friends and family.
