Courtyard renovation improves hospital accessibility
May 22, 2026
The Stratford General Hospital site’s courtyard will reopen to the public on Tuesday, May 26.
The courtyard, which has been closed for renovations since March 23, will see improved accessibility and aesthetics.
During the eight-week project, the landscaping crew updated many areas. First, the pathway was rerouted from the gazebo, allowing the gazebo to be used as a sitting area instead of a throughway. It was also refreshed with new paint.
“We reused a lot of the existing furniture for the gazebo, but some new pieces have been added,” said Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance Director of Facilities Management and Environmental Services, Doug Biesinger.
In addition, the contractor made the pathway flatter and removed
pave stones to create new concrete walkways. The landscaping was also improved with new and revitalized flower beds. Finally, new lighting and drainage completed the project.
“The paving stones were heaving due to tree roots and age,” said Biesinger. “We protected and blocked off areas of risk over time, but it was starting to significantly reduce the usable area.”
A Touch of Dutch Landscaping & Garden Service Ltd., did the work and provincial funding from the Healthcare Infrastructure Renewal Fund, and support from the Stratford General Hospital Foundation, covered the renovation costs.
An official Grand Opening will take place at a later date.
